The former First Lady Melania Trump was noticeably absent from her husband’s New Year’s Eve celebration at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Sunday night. During the event, the ex-President Donald Trump revealed the sad reason why his wife could not be in attendance.
Melania’s Mother Is ‘Very Ill’
Page Six reported that while speaking at his New Year’s Eve event, Trump revealed that Melania could not attend because her beloved mother Amalija Knavs is “very ill.”
“Hopefully, that’ll be OK, but it’s a tough one, a very tough one,” Trump said, adding that Melania “sends her love” from her mother’s bedside.
“She knows probably about 95 percent of the people in this room,” he continued. “We just want to wish Amalija that she gets better as quickly as possible.”
Trump did not specify what illness that Knavs is suffering from. Melania has reportedly been with her mother since before Christmas.
“Melania has always been very devoted to her entire family,” a source close to Melania told Fox News. “It should be no surprise that she spent this Christmas with her ailing mother.”
Melania To Campaign For Trump
This comes after it was reported that Melania plans to step up her game when it comes to campaigning for her husband this year as he seeks re-election.
“Trump and his family are so secure that he will become president again that insiders at Mar-a-Lago say he’s reached an agreement with Melania to step up top-tier diplomatic appearances in 2024,” an insider said.
“Melania realizes it’s her time to join the ranks of historic first ladies and leave her mark on history … She feels better prepared for her potential role the second time around,” this source added.
“We’re going to have a fantastic year,” Trump himself said at his New Year’s Eve party. “Our country has gone to hell but we’re going to turn it around, we’re going to turn it around quickly.”

Melania Speaks To Immigrants
Melania was born in Slovenia in 1970 to Amalija and Viktor Knavs, and she went on to become an American citizen in 2006. While speaking to 25 newly naturalized citizens at the National Archives Naturalization Ceremony in Washington D.C. last month, Melania recalled the “tremendous sense of pride and belonging” she felt when she became a U.S. citizen.
“For me, reaching the milestone of American citizenship marked the sunrise of certainty,” she said, according to The Hill. “At that exact moment, I forever discarded the layer of burden connected with whether I would be able to live in the United States. I hope you’re blanketed with similar feelings of comfort right now.”
“My personal experience of traversing the challenges of the immigration process opened my eyes to the harsh realities these people face, including you, who try to become U.S. citizens,” she continued.
Melania ended her speech by applauding the 25 new American citizens as she stood next to the Declaration of Independence.
“Becoming an American citizen comes with responsibility, it means actively participating in the democratic process and guarding our freedom,” she concluded. “It also means leading by example and contributing to our society. It is a life altering experience that takes time, determination and sometimes, even tremendous strength.”
