Jeremy Redfern, press secretary for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, is getting heat for a comment about former President Donald Trump being in the “basement” when in reality he was attending his mother-in-law’s funeral.
Aside from the absurdity of equating Trump to President Joe Biden, Redfern’s tweet had some seriously unfortunate timing.
The communications specialist for DeSantis suggested that while his candidate was out campaigning, appealing to voters, and pounding the pavement, Trump, Biden, and Nikki Haley were all nowhere to be found.
“Current location of presidential candidates not named Ron DeSantis – Nikki Haley: Basement Donald Trump: Basement Joe Biden: Basement,” he wrote on the X social media platform.

Trump Wasn’t In His Basement
The problem with the Team DeSantis jab isn’t the harmless, albeit weak, attempt at criticizing the top GOP contender for the nomination. Rather, it was a complete lack of awareness as to what was going on in Trump’s world.
Redfern’s comment about DeSantis’ political opponents being in their basement came on the same day that Trump was attending the funeral of his mother-in-law.
The mother of former First Lady Melania Trump, Amalija Knavs, passed away last Tuesday at the age of 78. Trump posted to Truth Social about services for Knavs.
“The service for Melania’s mother was truly a beautiful one,” he said. “I’d like to thank everyone for all of your prayers and best wishes!”

Redfern Gets Torched
Needless to say, Redfern was eviscerated for the insensitive and ill-timed remarks by Team Trump.
“President Trump was at a funeral for his mother-in-law when you tweeted this,” Jason Miller, senior adviser for Trump’s reelection campaign, pointed out.
Kaelan Dorr, who previously worked on Trump’s campaign, also took a jab at Redfern.
“Bro, President Trump was actually at his mother-in-law’s funeral today…yikes,” he wrote.
This isn’t the first time the DeSantis campaign has bumbled and fumbled its way into controversy, or DeSantis himself for that matter. He needs to be wary of who is advising him, as this is probably why the campaign has floundered so badly.
DeSantis left voters baffled after suggesting that the Trump administration “colluded” with Big Tech to bury the Hunter Biden laptop story, ostensibly causing him to lose the 2020 presidential election.
“I look back at the Hunter Biden censorship, which was a huge, huge deal to happen in the 2020 election, and yet those were Donald Trump’s own agencies that were colluding with Big Tech,” he said. “I would never allow that to happen. I would fire those people immediately.”
DeSantis also stepped in it when he allowed the media to distort his “listless vessels” comment and joined them in the narrative that Trump could have done more to prevent January 6th.
Rather than admitting the poor timing of his social media post, Redfern decided to take another jab at Trump involving the funeral.
“I’m glad Trump was able to attend his mother-in-law’s funeral today and grieve with Melania’s family,” he wrote in a reply to Miller. “Unlike the gold star families that weren’t allowed to have full military honors for their loved one’s at our national cemeteries in 2020.”
X host Tucker Carlson has described the people in DeSantis’s campaign, especially those who represent him online, as the “nastiest, the stupidest, and the most zero-sum people” he has ever seen.
Redfern is doing little to dispel that claim.
