Many Americans vote for Republicans because they supposedly will do the opposite of Democrats. Especially on an issue like spending.

But what if Republicans are just as bad as Democrats on the issue?

What if the current Republican-led House spent more than the House when it was led by Nancy Pelosi?

That’s exactly what some conservative Republicans say happened on Wednesday night when the GOP majority in the House passed the Chuck Schumer ‘minibus’ spending bill.

Budget gimmicks and earmarks are an intoxicating cocktail.

After 14 months sober, Congress has fallen off the wagon.

By a vote of 339 to 85, the Republican led House just passed a minibus that spends tens of billions more than Pelosi’s House spent on the same things last year.

Republicans No Better Than Democrats With Spending Bill

From Yahoo News, “The House of Representatives pushed through a government funding bill days before the deadline of a partial government shutdown — and some far-right Republicans are not happy.”

“Far-right” means being concerned about too much government spending, apparently.

Anyway, the story continued:

The more than $450 billion “minibus” funding package passed the House Wednesday in a 339-85 vote, with nearly all Democrats and 132 Republicans voting in favor. Members of the far-right House Freedom Caucus voiced their consternation at the compromise.

The hardline group released a joint statement Tuesday encouraging other Republicans to vote against the spending bill, arguing it does not address GOP priorities and sacrifices the leverage they have with their House majority.

The Republicans who voted no wanted their oppositional voices heard, loud and clear.

Voting no on a complete policy surrender was simple.

Another day of Congress further indebting the American People who can barely afford the cost of living.

From Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene:

“The spending level of today’s minibus is higher than what was agreed upon under Speaker McCarthy. And this bill didn’t just increase spending, it gave Joe Biden and Chuck Schumer everything they wanted on their wish list, and that is something I’ll always refuse to vote for.”

— Echo Voice (@ReachEchoVoice) March 7, 2024

Several Freedom Caucus members tagged the bill as “#SwampOmnibus” on social media.

From Lauren Boebert, citing Joe Biden’s upcoming State of the Union address on Thursday:

The #SwampOmnibus maintains COVID spending levels, funds the Green New Deal, and excludes nearly all conservative policy riders we fought for.

No wonder Democrats are ramming this monstrosity through before Sleepy Joe takes the stage tomorrow.

The real question is: why are…

— Rep. Lauren Boebert (@RepBoebert) March 6, 2024

Rep. Thomas Massie pointed out that Sen. Lindsey Graham added eight earmarks in the passed omnibus.

One Republican Senator gets 8 earmarks in the omnibus today.

No one voted to add these and no one gets to vote to take these out.

We have gone backwards 14 years, to before the 2010 Tea Party wave.

What’s the Point of the Republican Party?

Yahoo noted, “The ‘minibus’ bill funds several departments, including the Department of Agriculture, Commerce, Energy, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Justice, Transportation, and Veterans Affairs. It now moves to the Senate to be passed into law. Several additional appropriations bills will need to be passed by March 22 to keep Congress afloat and avoid a government shutdown this year.”

If Republicans are spending as much – and even more – than Democrats, what is the point of their party?

What is the point of voting for Republicans ever again?
