If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Axios seems to be taking that mantra to heart.
The outlet recycled a column from October of 2023 that claimed the open border illegal immigrant crisis in America is little more than a “myth.”
“By using the term ‘open border,’ conservatives are falsely suggesting that anyone can get into the U.S. without much hassle,” they claimed in a post on X. “But the southern border is more fortified than it’s ever been.”
Yes, that line was written and published with a straight face.
Fox News reporter Bill Melugin, who is some would say, the nation’s foremost authority on the open border due to his extensive on-site reporting, responded with a short video clip that blew up the entire Axios narrative.
“Super fortified!” he said with as much scorn as could be packed into a two-word response.

Axios Claims That Biden’s Open Border Is A Myth, Is A Myth
The video provided by Melugin was posted to social media last month by his Fox News colleague, photographer Bud Knapp.
The scene, reported on by The Political Insider, shows two human smuggling SUVs caught on camera dropping off groups of illegal immigrants near the United States border.
The individuals are then seen trotting around the border wall and entering the country illegally without any resistance from authorities and without any difficulty getting through a wide-open section of the barrier.
“Our photographer in Jacumba, CA just witnessed two human smuggling SUVs drop off groups of illegal immigrants who then trot around the border wall and enter the US,” Melugin said at the time.
Melugin added that the illegal immigrants from this randomly captured event hailed from all parts of the world, including Asia and the Middle East.
“People from China, Turkey, & India in this group,” he described. “This is in eastern San Diego County, and there was only one single Border Patrol agent in the area, per our photographer.”
Not only does one fail to conclude that the border is “fortified” after watching the clip, but they most likely come away with an even greater sense and understanding that the problem is much worse than is being reported.
Ashley St. Clair provided another clip which shows that the only myth in the Axios column is the notion that they are an outlet without a clear bias in their reporting.

Axios Must Like Being Mocked
The Axios column claiming that Biden’s border crisis is a “myth” got hammered when it was published back in October. Why they would opt to recycle it is anybody’s guess.
Perhaps they like the abuse.
The column was written by Russell Contreras, the “Justice and Race” reporter for the outlet, so you know exactly how seriously you should take the effort. The crux of his argument is that the massive number of encounters at the southern border indicates success.
The problem with that argument is:
- Illegal immigrants think the odds of them getting into the country are high enough that they’re willing to take a chance by overwhelming the system.
- It does not address the fact that even after being arrested, we’ve seen mass releases of illegal immigrants occurring in cities around the country.
- The article mentions “gotaways” zero times. That number last stood at 1.8 million – KNOWN!
Your argument that the Biden border is “fortified” tends to be undercut when you simply ignore close to 2 million known illegal immigrants who have eluded authorities, and countless million that they don’t even know about.
The media just continue to embarrass themselves on a daily basis.
Now is the time to support and share the sources you trust.
