Comcast, the parent company of NBCUniversal, has announced a significant restructuring. It plans to spin off most of its cable networks into a new entity named “SpinCo.”

This move includes major channels like MSNBC, CNBC, USA Network, and E!, aiming to separate these operations from the traditional NBC broadcast network.

The decision comes after MSNBC experienced a significant decline in viewership, particularly after the recent election, with ratings dropping by over 50%.

This corporate strategy suggests Comcast’s response to the ongoing trend of cord-cutting and the diminishing appeal of traditional cable television. It highlights the need for a strategic pivot away from networks like MSNBC as their primary focus, which has faced challenges in maintaining its audience.

The separation process means some significant changes at the leftist opinion network. Changes so big that they’re practically starting over.

MSNBC Has Some Big, Big Problems

All of this comes in the wake of MSNBC experiencing a significant decline in viewership for their Election Day coverage and beyond.

And then there was the controversy post-“Hitler’s” election.

The network’s flagship show, Morning Joe, saw its hosts, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, meeting with Donald Trump. That move led to immediate negative feedback on both sides of the aisle. Not to mention further viewer loss.

Now, there is uncertainty surrounding MSNBC’s branding. Mark Lazarus, who will lead the new venture, has suggested that the network might need to change its name, signifying a rebranding effort to adapt to its new corporate structure.

“I completely empathize with people who think this would be a bittersweet thing,” Lazarus said. “I think it’s exciting because very few times in life you get to have the opportunity to be part of what I’ll call a ‘well-funded startup.’”

MSNBC may have to change its name as part of today’s spinoff, which will also likely impact (and limit) its newsgathering.

Anybody Getting The Axe?

In short, the immediate future for MSNBC involves uncertainty regarding its operational structure and branding. To the point where Joe Scarborough awkwardly joked that everybody could be fired.

“I mean, I could be completely wrong: we could all be fired a year from now,” he said, “When this happens, you never know what’s going to happen.”

His comment prompted wife and co-host Mika Brzezinski to add, “Or tomorrow.”

As he tried to downplay the move, Scarborough said his show ‘could all be fired a year from now’, to which Mika chimed in: ‘Or tomorrow.’

The Comcast sale and the subsequent spin-off of its cable networks, including MSNBC, might indeed lead to layoffs or changes in personnel. That said, specific details regarding layoffs haven’t been officially confirmed.

But seeing them reduced to a “well-funded startup” is a thing of beauty.

First, Trump wins re-election, then MSNBC hosts are forced to grovel for him to take them back; now, the whole brand might be terminated entirely.
